ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS IN CHILDBIRTH

Much more is at stake during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum than survival.
Know your rightsGet involved

MUCH MORE IS
AT STAKE…

during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum than survival. In communities all around the world, people are working to achieve respectful maternity care in that respects the rights and needs of individual birthing women and families.

Human Rights in Childbirth (HRIC) aims look at these experiences through a human rights lens, to connect, strengthen and support individuals and groups and advocate for top-down and bottom-up improvements to maternity services that will ultimately put women at the centre of care and decision-making.

HRIC WAS FOUNDED IN THE HAGUE IN 2012…

with the vision to protect and fulfil the full spectrum of women’s rights in pregnancy and childbirth.

Our organization does this by galvanizing the most important stakeholders in maternity care from the legal and medical professions, to advocacy and community groups to make human rights a reality for pregnant and birthing women around the world. By local or regional partner invitation, we share information and connect the international with the regional and local, but always by putting women and their lived, personal experiences at the centre of this discourse.

hric’s legal advocacy

ranges from convening multi-stakeholder conferences, building multi-stakeholder support networks and…

legal expertise, reporting on mistreatment of women in pregnancy and childbirth and strategic intervention in legal cases and parliamentary inquiries, to education and awareness of human and legal rights in childbirth.

STRATEGIC
PRIORITY

We are bearing witness to a unique period in human history…

where women’s reproductive rights are being tested and restricted, from the time before a woman becomes pregnant to the time after she gives birth. Rights during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum are reproductive rights, and an attack on any one reproductive right inevitably affects these as well.
As a result, during the current programming period, HRIC’s strategic priority is to address the backlash of extreme and authoritarian regimes in usurping reproductive rights.
